Primary Prevention
Build a positive school culture, teach expectations, and strengthen social and emotional skills.

Primary Prevention focuses on:

  • preventing behavioral escalation before it occurs
  • creating structured, predictable, and supportive educational environments
  • helping students be able to learn, regulate, and succeed

Primary Prevention is anchored by the Green Behavior Zone™, which helps staff understand what keeps students regulated, engaged, and successful throughout the school day.

In special education, challenging behavior is often a form of communication.

Welle teaches educators, paraprofessionals, therapists, administrators, and support staff to recognize student strengths, understand individual needs, and build relationships that reduce anxiety, frustration, and behavioral escalation.

Rather than asking, "How do we respond when a student becomes escalated?" Welle encourages schools to ask:

"What can we do today to help this student remain successful?"

Secondary Prevention
Identify early warning signs, monitor changes in behavior, and respond appropriately to de-escalate the situation.

Secondary Prevention focuses on:

  • recognizing changes in behavior and early signs of escalation
  • objectively assessing student behavior
  • selecting responses that are appropriate for the student's level of need
  • producing positive outcomes that allow students to be ready and available for learning

This is anchored by the Lalemand Red Behavior Scale®, which provides all staff with Welle's Common Language™ and a structured decision-making process. Secondary Prevention is also grounded in both Verbal De-Escalation skills as well as physical Self-Protection and Restraint skills.

The Red Behavior Scale Helps Staff:

  • Objectively assess escalating behavior
  • Recognize early warning signs and respond sooner
  • Determine the appropriate response based on the level of escalation
  • Communicate using Welle's Common Language™ across staff and departments.
  • Document behavior consistently to support trend analysis and continous improvement.

Tertiary Prevention
Respond effectively when incidents occur, document objectively, and use data to improve future outcomes.

Tertiary Prevention focuses on:

  • reviewing incidents
  • documenting objective information
  • identifying patterns
  • improving future outcomes

Behavioral incidents should never simply end when the crisis is over. Tertiary Prevention is anchored in a structured Post Incident Review process and enhanced with consistent Documentation using tools such as Welle's Red Scale System App.

Post Incident Reviews Help:

  • conduct structured reviews of behavioral incidents
  • allow for student intervention plans, supports, and classroom strategies to be updated
  • highlight continuous learning that strengthens future prevention

The Red Scale System App:

  • creates a comprehensive behavioral history to address each student's unique needs
  • provides meaningful data that drives proactive decision making and continuous improvement
